Adult Day Service Use Among Minority Older Adults: Facilitators, Barriers, and Outcomes From an Updated Integrative Literature Review Between 2010 to 2021

Abstract: Adult day services (ADS) are one of the more popular long-term care options for racial and ethnic minority older Americans. Focusing on minority older adults, this study aims to (a) identify both the individual and structural/organizational levels factors associated with ADS use and to (b) examine ADS’ effect on health and well-being. Using the integrative review approach of Whittemore and Knafl, we found 14 studies published between 2010 to 2021. Findings concluded that individual-level needs and enabling fac… Show more

“…Consequently, our study and findings appear to offer the opportunity to raise awareness of the field of ADS and this topic among international researchers with the aim of inspiring further international studies. This approach would address the lack of research activity focusing on the ADS environment ( Li et al, 2022 ; Orellana et al, 2020 ) and further facilitate a cultural change in the ADS environment towards person-centered care on the international level ( Sadarangani et al, 2021a ). Furthermore, this approach would improve the care provided in terms of quality and the satisfaction of persons receiving ADS worldwide ( Bucy et al, 2023 ).…”

“…The lack of up-to-date data in Germany is due to the fact that little research has been conducted in the field of ADS. This research gap appears similar to the situation in the US ( Li et al, 2022 ), and extant research in ADS has primarily focused on the establishment of standardized measurements for key outcomes for clients, caregivers and policymakers, such as client well-being, or the development/testing of study designs for investigating the effectiveness of ADS (interventions) for clients and their caregivers ( Roth et al, 2020 ; Sadarangani et al, 2021b ). In addition to these research activities, person-centered care in the context of ADS now appears to be receiving attention from researchers ( Sadarangani et al, 2021a ).…”

“…With few notable exceptions [41,42], we especially lack current research on Canadian day programs with most research originating from the US or Canadian studies often dating back several decades [24,25,43]. ( 4) Differential effects of day programs on persons with multiple, intersecting vulnerabilities, are poorly understood, despite inequity concerns [38,[44][45][46]. Advanced age puts individuals at risk of ageism; physical and cognitive disabilities may expose them to ableism; the majority of older adults and their caregivers are women, often experiencing gender-inequities; and giving and receiving care are associated with substantial healthcare costs, disproportionally affecting those with low income [47].…”

“…To clarify the fuzzy notion of “activities” in the context of ADS ( Li et al, 2022 ; Sadarangani et al, 2022 ), it seems important to consider that people receiving ADS understand the life transition of receiving ADS as a transition in their place of leisure. This means that people who receive ADS report a shift in their place of leisure from the private domain to the communal ADS environment.…”
