Adult Mid Ileo-Ileal Intussusception Secondary to Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor (IMT): A Case Report and Literature Review

Abstract: The intestinal intussusception as a cause of bowel obstruction in adult is a rare finding and is a heralder for an underlying lesion. This is in stark contrast to intestinal intussusception in pediatric population where the etiology is always a primary or benign condition and thus bears different outcomes. We hereby present a case of a young female adult, without the presence of any significant comorbidity. She presented with nonspecific symptoms of small bowel intussusception. She was diagnosed as a case of a… Show more

“…An inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) can also present similar to lymphoma and should be differentiated from lymphoma ( 48 49 ). IMT is a rare mesenchymal spindle cell neoplasm that appears as a well-defined, homogeneous, or heterogeneously enhanced mass on CT.…”

“…It commonly arises in the small intestine and is rarely associated with small bowel intussusception ( Fig. 25 ) ( 48 49 ). Similarly, lymphoma can be a leading cause of small bowel intussusception, making the differential diagnosis difficult ( 48 50 ).…”

“…Intussusception is the invagination of a proximal portion of the intestine (intussusceptum) into an immediately distal segment (intussuscipiens) like a telescope [ 1 ]. It is usually benign, idiopathic and harmless in paediatric patients [ 2 ], but almost always pathological, with a lead point, in adults [ 1 ]. About 1% cases of adult bowel obstruction are caused by intussusception, and >90% have a distinct underlying cause related to bowel [ 3 ].…”

“…The clinical manifestations of adult intussusception are often nonspecific, it can be acute paroxysmal colic or chronic, dull pain that lasts for months or longer ( Balogun et al, 2019 ; Farhan et al, 2020 ). As the disease progresses, symptoms of intestinal obstruction such as abdominal distention and vomiting may occur, and in severe cases, intestinal necrosis may occur, which can cause fever, loss of consciousness, and even death.…”
