Adult-onset idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip

Abstract: We report the case of a 23-year-old man diagnosed with adult-onset idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip. Chondrolysis of the hip is a disorder most frequently seen in children who have suffered with slipped capital femoral epiphyses. Idiopathic chondrolysis of the hip is extremely rare and to our knowledge, its onset has never been documented in adults aged over 20. With reference to the available medical literature, we summarise the current clinical management of this unusual but important cause of young adult … Show more

“…In 9/11 patients with PRCC, SL ligaments were torn at the membranous portion and 6/11 patients with PRCC exhibited >3 mm, but <4 mm, in SL distance, representing suspicious SL dissociation. However, rapid disease progression and imaging findings of PRCC observed in our patients were compatible with post-arthroscopic chondrolysis observed in other joints (1,4,9,14,15). The membranous portion of the SL ligament is not a major stabilizer for articulation and, if torn, is minor in the degree of severe cartilage destruction in PRCC.…”

“…Since chondrolysis is rare and confused with various diseases such as osteonecrosis, infectious arthritis, or neuropathic arthropathy according to joint location, the diagnosis of chondrolysis is very difficult (2). To our knowledge, only two articles published in English to date have addressed post-arthroscopic chondrolysis in the field of radiology (14,15).…”

“…Der erste Bericht über die Chondrolyse des Hüftgelenkes erfolgte bereits 1930 durch Waldenström, wobei hier spezifische Ursachen, wie z. B. die Epiphyseolysis capitis femoris, Traumata oder Infektionen, angeschuldet wurden [ 6 , 7 ]. Bisher wurden in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur weniger als 130 Fälle von ICH berichtet [ 6 ].…”
