Adult Social Capital and Track Placement of Ethnic Groups in Germany

Abstract: The dictum that "context matters" notwithstanding, few researchers have focused on how social capital affects educational outcomes for ethnic groups outside of the United States. Using German Socioeconomic Panel (GSOEP) data, analyses highlight the group-specific effects of parental social capital on track placement among 11-16-year-old German and non-German students. For both groups, parents' family ties fail to affect track placement. Parents' community ties have mixed effects. Among Germans, parental involv… Show more

“…For example, the Impact Threshold for Confounding Variables (ITCV) does not control for the impact of unmeasured confounds on a focal association, but rather quantifies how powerful they must be to negate causal inference for that association. In a sense, it estimates a confidence interval for the inference (for original formulation, see Frank 2000; for applications, see Augustine, Cavanagh, and Crosnoe forthcoming; Cheng, Martin, and Werum 2007). The equation is the following: r x,y − r # x,y / 1 − r # x,y, where r # x,y = t / SQRT[( n − q − 1) + t 2 ], t is the critical t -value, n is the sample size, and q is the number of model parameters.…”

“…Frank () formulated the ITCV, which has been used by other researchers to determine the robustness of their causal inferences (Cheng, Martin, and Werum, ; Crosnoe, ). The ITCV is calculated for specific predictors, and represents the product of two partial correlations: the partial correlation between the predictor and a hypothetical confound; and the partial correlation between the outcome and the hypothetical confound.…”

“…children of immigrants and Latino children of U.S.-born parents, the interaction terms were not statistically significant, suggesting that Latino student concentration does not vary by the proportion of other non-White students. “…After primary school, which usually consists of one classroom for each grade (SCI 2008) students have a variety of secondary school options akin to tracking systems in many Western nations (Cheng et al 2007 ;Turner 1960 ). These include lower vocational (VMBO, the least selective), intermediate general (HAVO), and university preparatory (VWO, the most selective).…”
