Advanced Boron Carbide Matrix Nanocomposites Obtained from Liquid-Charge: Focused Review

Abstract: Boron carbide is known as a hard material; it possesses a unique complex of physical-mechanical properties and has diverse applications in industries. An expansion of its field of uses stems from the creation of boron carbide matrix nanocomposite materials. In view of this perspective, an effective liquid-charge synthesizing method for their components in nanopowder form has been proposed. This paper provides a focused review on advanced boron carbide matrix ceramic and metal-ceramic nanocomposites recently ob… Show more

“…Some of previously known obtaining methods for boron nitride (in addition to that of isostructural carbon) nanomaterials doped with ferromagnetic clusters were presented in [24]. For effective synthesizing the nanopowder composite h-BN-Fe 3 O 4 , it was specially modified a chemical approach using liquid-charges, which initially was developed [25] for advanced boron carbide matrix nanocomposites.…”

“…Boron carbide is a hard ceramic material which has unique mechanical properties [53][54][55][56][57][58] like high hardness, ballistic resistance, low density, wear resistance etc., which is why it is typically employed as an abrasive material, as industrial components or as plate armour material. Its mechanical stability, chemical inertness and high boron content also make BxC a promising material for neutron converter layers in solid-state neutron detection where 10 B converts neutrons to detectable particles.…”

“…However, crushing and grinding in air can affect the surface properties of B 4 C powders, including their wettability [5]. Pure wettability of B 4 C complicates biological applications [5] and fabrication of ceramic composite materials [8].…”

“…Nonetheless, due to long time treatment at high temperatures, the product is coarse and requires crushing, grinding, and ball-milling. Addition of grain growth inhibitors (e.g., tungsten boride) can address the problem of increased grain growth [8]. While recent reports have introduced innovative synthesis methods for B 4 C particles with varying sizes and morphologies [6], there is no widely accepted approach for producing high-purity, fine B 4 C powders.…”
