Advanced computer aided technologies for design automation in footwear industry

Abstract: In the footwear industry there is growing methodological research linking advanced computer-based technologies to the traditional manufacturing process. This paper deals with the automation of shoe design phases and describes a computer aided design system that brings together theories and tools from geometric modeling, image processing, and reverse engineering. At first, the paper reviews the current technologies used for creating new shoe models. Then the paper presents an approach based on shoe 3D virtual m… Show more

“…The creation of customized shoes has been investigated in several research activities [4][5][6][7][8][9]. They face the digitalization of customer's feet by adopting non-contact 3D scanning systems and the related range data elaboration software tools in order to provide a virtual foot model [10] or a set of meaningful of cross-section measurements [11].…”

“…For instance, the work of Tzivelekis et al [61] may facilitate the design of impeller-type geometries with an interactive application that automatically generates the 3D models. Similarly, seeking to make shoe design more effective and agile, Raffaeli and Germani [50] developed a CAD system for automating the most critical stages of shoes styling.…”

“…With the rapid development of computer technology and advanced design and manufacturing technologies, such as Computer-Aided Design (CAD) [11]- [13], automating the process of manufacturing, the customized and comfort design of shoe lasts [14]- [28], helmet shell [29]- [32], glove [33], [34], apparel [35], [36], spectacle frame [37] becomes possible. The design of these products becomes more convenient and easier with the emergence of CAD system.…”
