Advanced dynamical risk analysis for monitoring anaerobic digestion process

Abstract: Methanogenic fermentation involves a natural ecosystem that can be used for waste water treatment. This anaerobic process can have two locally stable steady-states and an unstable one making the process hard to handle. The aim of this work is to propose analytical criteria to detect hazardous working modes, namely situations where the system evolves towards the acidification of the plant. We first introduce a commonly used simplified model and recall its main properties. To assess the evolution of the system w… Show more

“…As mentioned before, the anaerobic digestion process includes four stages that come in sequence, where different kinds of microorganisms take part at each stage. In order to obtain a stable and efficient process, process monitoring is necessary [4,62,237]. Monitoring enables early detection of problems and disturbances and indicates the required adjustments to the operational parameters (to be within acceptable ranges).…”

“…Using their results, they proposed a monitoring strategy based on a stability criteria named "overloading tolerance" in monitoring a "destabilization risk index", cf. [8].…”

“…This study indicates that a control strategy should be designed so as to trade-off robustness and productivity, which could be quantified by the system stability boundaries. In [9,10], the authors introduced a risk index for the operation of an anaerobic digestion system, which indicates whether the process has been triggered to a dangerous working mode. This index was defined based on the areas of the system stability regions and has been recently revisited in [11] based on a rigorous analysis of the nonlinear dynamics.…”
