[1] Despite growing interest in the visible light-absorbing organic component of atmospheric aerosols, referred to as "brown" carbon, our knowledge of its chemical composition remains limited. It is well accepted that biomass burning is one important source of "brown" carbon in the atmosphere. In this study, cloud water samples heavily affected by biomass burning were collected at Mount Tai (1534 m, ASL), located in Shandong province in the North China Plain in summer 2008. The samples were analyzed with high performance liquid chromatography equipped with a UV/Vis absorbance detector immediately followed by electrospray ionization and analysis using a time-of-flight (ToF) mass spectrometer. The high mass resolution and accuracy provided by the ToF mass spectrometer allow determination of the elemental composition of detected ions. Using this approach, the elemental compositions of 16 major light-absorbing compounds, which together accounted for approximately half of measured sample absorption between 300 and 400 nm, were determined. The most important classes of light-absorbing compounds were found to be nitrophenols and aromatic carbonyls. Light absorption over this wavelength range by reduced nitrogen compounds was insignificant in these samples.

We have used a variety of physicochemical systems, including water‐solvent partitions, solubility in non‐aqueous solvents, and HPLC and gas chromatographic retentions to obtain descriptors for nitro compounds and high energy compounds. These descriptors can then be used to predict a wide range of other physicochemical properties as well as thermodynamic and environmental properties. We illustrate the latter by predictions of the vapor pressure of sublimation, the enthalpy of sublimation and the heat capacity of sublimation at 298.15 K, and predictions of human skin permeability from water. With respect to the obtained descriptors, the most startling finding is that cyclic high energy compounds, with no ‘active’ hydrogen atom, have a substantial ‘hydrogen bond’ acidity. We suggest that this is due to electron‐deficient ring systems that act as Lewis acids.

Crystallization of ice from TNT red water was studied using a scraped unit. Growth rate, crystal size distribution, and median particle size of ice crystals were measured. The effect of subcooling, temperature, growth rate, and crystal size on the treatment of red water was investigated. The relationship between ice crystal growth rate and effective distribution coefficient was correlated. From the plot of ice growth rate against subcooling degree, the order of the growth kinetic was in the range of 1.2 to 2.0 for various concentrations. The purity of ice crystals increased with increasing amounts of partial melt. Above 99 % of dinitrotoluene sulfonates in red water were removed after crystallization at a cooling rate of 1.0 K/min, a final crystallization temperature of −10 °C, and a yield of 50 %. The purity of ice crystal was significantly affected by the subcooling degree. Finally, it was shown that TNT red water of 9800 mg/L COD can be treated to provide water of 54 mg/L COD by scraped ice crystallization at a yield of 50 %.
