Base isolation represents one of the most efficient strategy for the reduction of the structural vulnerability of buildings and bridges. Design procedures generally aim to provide the proper period shift, in order to reduce spectral acceleration values and, consequently, the base shear and internal forces. On the other hand, high displacement demands can be achieved, which can be partially limited by providing dissipative capacity through hysteretic behaviors. Although design procedures allow to fairly estimate the design displacement of the adopted devices, extreme seismic event can occur, and displacement higher than the design value can be experienced. Especially for Curved Surface Slider devices, if the displacement demand exceeds a certain geometrical limit, non-negligible damage can occur at the sliding pad, and variations in the force response are consequently noticed. In this work modeling strategies for the computation of the seismic response of base-isolated buildings are presented, by considering extreme earthquake loading conditions. Analytical models are reported for Curved Surface Slider devices, calibrated through the experimental outcomes of tests performed at the Laboratory of EUCENTRE Foundation in Pavia (Italy). In addition, simplified dynamic systems are defined, which allow fast assessments of the global response of a base-isolated structure, even though extreme seismic events are applied. Results have been compared to the response returned by an experimental hybrid simulation, in order to evaluate the accuracy of the presented dynamic systems.

For double concave curved surface slider (DCCSS) isolators with a flat rim and lacking restrainers, such as those most commonly used in Europe, the rigid slider can exceed the geometrical capability of the housing plate during earthquakes stronger than those produced in simulations. During this over-stroke displacement, DCCSSs preserve the ability to support superstructure gravity loads and the capacity to dissipate energy. There are currently no applicable hysteresis rules or available algebraic solutions that can be used to predict over-stroke behaviour for response-history analysis. This study presents an algebraic solution to extend basic theories for estimating the actual limit displacement of DCCSS devices with over-stroke capacity. DCCSS behaviour in the over-stroke sliding regime was modelled with a focus on geometrical compatibility and kinematics. The proposed analytical formulation was calibrated on the basis of experimental controlled-displacement tests performed on single DCCSS devices. A case study of a six-storey reinforced concrete frame isolated building was modelled using a combination of non-linear elements that are currently available in several structural analysis software packages and able to correctly model over-stroke displacement behaviour for non-linear time history analyses. The DCCSS model was augmented with a friction model capable of accounting for torsional effects, axial load, and velocity variabilities. Comparison with non-linear dynamic analysis outcomes shows that the forces and displacements in the over-stroke sliding regime are predictable and therefore useful for the designer.

Optimization of the Use Time of a Shake Table with Specimen Preparation outside the Table Surface

The shake table test is one of the preferred techniques used to understand the dynamic response of a structure. However, due to the limited number of facilities available to perform such tests and their expensiveness, researchers often must rely on numerical models validated with the results of the static tests only. Moreover, most research papers concerning shake table tests lack details on how the tests were planned and executed. This paper explains the steps used for the preparation and execution of shake table tests on three reduced-scale buildings. These buildings were constructed outside the shake table surface, on a metallic base frame, and later moved to the shake table used for the tests in order to optimize the time of the experimental campaign. This approach enabled us to complete the tests in only 6 days. The approach presented in this paper may be helpful to researchers who want to increase the effectiveness of the available shake table facility and overcome the limitations of time and budget. Moreover, the solution presented in this article helps in the displacement of specimens without the use of a crane or other sophisticated hydraulic machinery. Thus, it could also be useful for testing specimens that have been aged and that are sensitive to displacements.
