Advanced Pressure Management for Sustainable Leakage Reduction and Service Optimization: A Case Study in Central Chile

Abstract: The central part of Chile has been in severe unprecedented drought for more than ten years, becoming a water-stressed area. ESVAL, one of the main water utilities in the Chilean water sector, is responsible for delivering potable water to the population and securing long-term supply in the vast majority of this area. In order to achieve this goal, ESVAL is implementing different measures, with pressure management being one of them. This paper aims to describe the works executed in La Calera city to implement a… Show more

“…The water supply at Noja is controlled by a DN300 PRV equipped with an electronic controller which varies pressure at the outlet of the valve, P2, according to the flow to keep a fixed pressure at the critical point P3. It is an open-loop CPC method similar to the one used in [5], which relies on the flow measurement at the inlet of the WDN. The flow signal comes from the pulse output of a mechanical water meter installed upstream the PRV.…”

“…The new SARIMA model allows to predict the headloss between the PRV and the critical point of the area at any given day/time, based on previous historic pressure data of the area. As an advantage to the model built in [5], flow measurement is not needed. Unlike the model built by Fontana et al [27], the SARIMA model will permit commissioning a CPC PM strategy without connecting the PRV with the critical point of the WDN.…”

“…This article provides a comprehensive description of the simulation process for the sample networks. The work also involves proposing a novel evaluation metric that differs completely from existing literature [4,13,24,46,47], along with deriving an expression for pressure imbalance.…”
