Advanced Vector Control Design for DFIM-Based Hydropower Storage for Fault Ride-Through Enhancement

Abstract: This paper proposes an advanced vector control method for rotor side converter of doubly-fed induction machine (DFIM)-based storage hydropower in order to enhance the fault ride-through capability in both generating and motor modes. In this method, the active power and stator voltage control loops are on the d-axis and q-axis, respectively. Since the active power and the stator voltage control loops are inherently slow and nonlinear, an effective input signal (EIS) based on Lyapunov theory is designed and adde… Show more

“…• The performance of DfIMs during grid failure and in meeting grid code requirements, specifically lowvoltage ride through (lVrT), can be challenging [24], [33], [49], [51], [52]. In this situation, the rotor voltage dynamically increases, and a special protection scheme must be designed to protect the converter [24], [52]. In the worst case (i.e., severe short circuit faults), a crowbar must be activated, short-circuiting the rotor windings, to protect the converter against the overvoltages before the circuit breakers switch off the drive.…”

“…Some literatures have studied the converters and power electronics of the DFVSPS unit [15][16][17]. In addition, some literatures have studied the characteristics of the doubly fed variable-speed pumped-storage unit in the event of a failure [18,19]. e DFVSPS unit is a huge system, including pump turbine, doubly fed induction motor (DFIM), inverter, control system, etc.…”
