Advancements in Sustainable PVDF Copolymer Membrane Preparation Using Rhodiasolv® PolarClean As an Alternative Eco-Friendly Solvent

Abstract: In this work, Rhodiasolv® PolarClean was employed as a more sustainable solvent for the preparation of poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) flat sheet membranes via phase inversion technique by coupling vapour induced phase separation (VIPS) and non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) processes. Preliminary calculations based on Hansen solubility parameters well predicted the solubilization of the polymer in the selected solvent. The effect of exposure time on humidity and the influence… Show more

“…The incorporation of the HFP group in VDF polymer is responsible for improving its properties because the fluorine segment has a high hydrophobicity and lower polarity. Thus, PVDF-HFP possesses higher solubility (especially in organic solvents), higher hydrophobicity, better mechanical strength, a lower glass transition temperature, lower crystallinity, and higher free volume compared with PVDF [ 25 , 26 ].…”

“…The membranes implemented in these water treatments are highly exposed to organic fouling the membrane to degrade and lessen the efficiency of the process. Russo et al (2021) developed highly hydrophilic and antifouling membranes from PES plastic. The addition of a Poly Vinyl Pyrrolidone (PVP) layer using the UV-polymerisation method in Rhodiasolv Polarclean solvent shows more excellent hydrophilicity, higher pure water permeability, and improved foulant rejection.…”
