Spiro[3, nonane-9,1′-cyclohexane]-2,4,6,8-tetrone ( 8) is an important intermediate that opens up two distinct synthetic pathways for the production of gabapentin and bispidine. This work describes the acidic hydrolysis of 2,4dioxo-3-azaspiro-1,5-dicarbonitrile (7) to obtain (8) and investigates the effect of the most important variables on its yield percentage. Box−Behnken design (BBD) as a subclass of response surface methodology (RSM) was conducted to explore the most suitable operating conditions for maximizing the yield of the product (8) and reducing the formation of the impurities. The effective factors in this process were the H 2 SO 4 concentration (X 1 ), reaction temperature (X 2 ), and reaction time (X 3 ). The optimal reaction conditions of 65.5% sulfuric acid concentration, 22 h time, and 102 °C temperature were obtained, corresponding to the maximum reaction yield. Under these conditions, the experimental yield was 89.25 ± 1.31%, which was matched with the predicted yield (90.03%). The yield of the reaction was significantly higher than that reported in most published studies, and the impurity formation reached a minimum. The optimization results showed that the reaction yield decreased at both low and high temperatures (as well as the acid concentration) owing to a lack of reaction progress and the formation of impurities. However, in the given time frame (19− 24 h), the impact of the time on the reaction efficiency was not as strong as that for the other two factors, despite being significant. In addition, 13 C and 1 H NMR analyses revealed that the formation of 2,4-dioxo-3-azaspiro[5.5]undecane-1-carboxamide (13) and 1,1cyclohexanediacetic acid (CDA)(14) was minimized.

Oil spills are a significant threat to the marine ecosystem that requires immediate removal from the oceanic environment. Many technologies have been employed to clean up oil spills. Of these, adsorption has scored a prominent success due to the high efficiency, economic viability, environmental friendship, and ease of application. The utilization of agricultural waste to produce biosorbents have been considered as an ecofriendly and efficient approach for removing oil. Thus, a new low-cost oil adsorbent was prepared via esterification of the wheat straw (Str) with a hydrophobic benzoyl group, the resulting copolymer (Str-co-Benz) was characterized by FTIR, TGA, DSC, and SEM and used at laboratory scale. The oil spill cleanup process was conducted using a crude oil-natural seawater system under different adsorption conditions such as oil concentration, adsorbent dose, agitation time and speed. Equilibrium studies were performed to determine the capacity of the prepared materials for crude oil adsorption. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were used to describe the experimental isotherms. The reliability of the data was examined and evaluated via application of response surface methodology program. The results showed that oil adsorption followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and fitted well with Langmuir model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 10.989 and 12.786 g/g for Str and (Str-co-Benz), respectively. Overall, the modified wheat husk is an effective platform for removing oil from marine ecosystems due to low cost, biodegradability, simple synthesis and fast removal. Moreover, the resulted solid can be used as a fuel in some industrial processes such as steam boilers and brick production incinerators.

The pulp and paper industry is one of the most significant industrial water polluters, generating large volumes of wastewater with high levels of organic pollutants, suspended solids, and other contaminants. Catalytic ozonation has emerged as a promising technique for the treatment of pulp and paper industry wastewater. Numerous reviews have presented the research on catalytic ozonation; however, open literature is missing a bibliometric analysis. Therefore, this article presents a bibliometric analysis of the research available on catalytic ozonation in pulp and paper industry wastewater treatment. A total of 578 documents extracted from the Scopus database have been examined via VOSviewer, MS Excel, and Rstudio to identify the research trends, influential authors, and research institutions in the field. The results reveal that the number of publications on the topic has increased significantly in recent years. This study also identified several influential authors, institutions, and highlighted future research directions in the field. Overall, the study provides insights into the state of research on catalytic ozonation in pulp and paper industry wastewater treatment and could help guide future research efforts in this area.
