“…Alongside well-known light-emitting materials such as organic dyes, rare-earth elements, and semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), carbon-based luminescent nanomaterials such as carbon dots (CDs) are gaining increasing popularity currently [ 1 , 2 ]. CDs are tiny nanoparticles composed of sp 2 - or sp 3 -carbon domains and rich in oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups.…”

“…Carbon dots have been extensively reviewed in term of synthesis, physicochemical properties, as well as their potential applications. Here, we refer the reader to the numerous good reviews on carbon dots [72,[82][83][84][85][86][87][88].…”

“…Due to the inherent structural properties of 0D nanostructures in spherical or quasi-spherical geometry, they are characterized by ultra-small size, high surface-to-volume ratio, high active edge sites per unit mass. Owing to the diameter of less than 100 nm, 0D nanoparticles exhibit edge and quantum confinement effects that are closely related to the electrical, optical, biological, mechanical behavior and other intrinsic properties of the material [ 39 ]. Most size and dimension of all 0D nanoparticles have notable effects on the physicochemical and biological properties as these factors alters the specific surface area and thermodynamic characteristics of the nanoparticles.…”
