AbstractEffective placement of stimulation fluids on horizontal, long interval and/or gravel-packed wells is critical for cost-efficient production enhancement. Successful case history work in 1999 1 , using precision rotary jetting technology (R-Jet) on the end of coiled tubing (CT), demonstrated to the oil and gas industry that fluid placement is a key factor in removing nearwellbore damage and optimizing well stimulation treatments. This paper will review continued efforts relating to precision rotary jet technology including extensive laboratory tests using a full-scale gravel pack (GP) model. Tests were videotaped for further visual study. Established guidelines applying lab results, computer modeling, and field validation provide a well-engineered, non-damaging (low nozzle pressure) treatment for optimum stimulation performance. Proper damage identification coupled with skillful stimulation fluid design are important steps to a successful job and will be highlighted in the global R-Jet case histories.The data clearly shows that a highly effective method of placing stimulation fluids into a completion, such as sand control screens or slotted liners, is to use CT-conveyed, rotary speed-controlled, forward-angled radial jets. This technique yields 360º coverage of the treatment area, is more efficient than traditional bullheading and CT methods and allows reduced treatment volumes to be considered. It applies to a wide selection of completions including horizontal wells which can now be successfully stimulated at reasonable costs. completion, such as the screen or liner, GP proppant, perforation tunnels, drill-in fluid filter cake and formation.

Problems associated with Pipeline flow capacity reduction due to the presence of Scales, Asphaltenes and Parrafins have always been present and are well documented. Solutions to these problems are not however as well understood or discussed and, more often than not, complete replacement of the affected section is imminent because of the limited solutions available to the operator. Completely changing a section of Pipeline can have significant costs associated with it. Indeed, material & labor costs, environmental impact due to Pipeline construction and loss of flowing capacity represent the key reasons to avoid this type of operation if at all possible and give reason for ongoing investigations into possible alternatives. This paper outlines a solution that was implemented several times in Ecuador whereby Coiled Tubing employing rotating & jetting technology was used to completely restore Pipeline flow capability without the need to replace any section of the affected tubular. This solution involved the use of proprietary rotating/jetting technology introduced into the Pipeline at strategic locations, defined by computer simulations, to affect a successful cleanout operation. Selecting an efficient cleaning fluid was also very important for the success of these operations as there were significant economical and environmental limitations that had to be overcome. Details about this solution, including defining the operational limitations of the Coiled Tubing material due to restrictions, orientation and curvature as well as fluid selection and other design limitations and considerations are included in this paper. Introduction An ongoing investigation to find technical & economical solutions for day to day problems such as pipeline plugging due to scale, and or asphaltene and paraffin presence allowed us to come up with both a cost effective and efficient solution: "Pipe Line Clean Up using Coiled Tubing, & Rotating Jetting Technology (RJT) Tool". At present, a total of five successful jobs in the Ecuadorian jungle have been performed that have helped a client restore complete flowing capacity to various pipelines/flowlines by cleaning and also avoid the excess costs involved for the replacement of said pipelines/flowlines; which, up until the introduction of this technology, represented the only viable alternative available. By minimizing the amount of downtime (NPT) that is customary with complete pipeline/flowline replacement as well as avoiding excessive surface preparation and cleanup costs, it is no surprise that the savings that were achieved by the implementation of this technology were substantial. Using advanced simulation software, engineers were able to properly define very difficult operational limits while at the same time logically programming job sequences, taking into account numerous conditions affecting the pipelines/flowlines. The use of efficient but, at the same time, economical cleaning fluids, was mandatory due to the environmental & economical constrains of this project. Several laboratory tests with pipeline samples were conducted prior to each job to help identify the correct fluid to be used for an efficient pipe line clean up, while at the same time reducing the environmental risks of this project. It should be noted that very valuable information was obtained from these operations and analyzed after every job. Said information allowed us to better understand the operations that were being performed and how we could utilize this information to improved subsequent operations. Rotating Jetting Technology (RJT) Rotating Jetting Technology (RJT) has been successfully utilized with Coiled Tubing since the early 1990's and is now considered commonplace to our industry. More than 3,500 wells in over 30 countries have used these tools on conventional cemented/cased hole and open hole (OH) completions to remove asphaltenes, paraffins, scales, cements, sand blockages and open hole near wellbore drilling mud damage. However, very little information exists pertaining to the use of RJT in pipeline/flowline cleanup operations.

As shown by technical papers as early as the 1960s, our industry has long known that hydrajetting perforations or slots through cemented casing could often "bail-out" a problem well that otherwise seemed completely resistant to hydraulic fracturing attempts. For most of the first 50 years of fracturing applications, few operators had sufficient demand for the fracturing process to make it a commodity service, especially before the advent of coiled tubing (CT) services in the 1980s. Often, this type of well service was costly because of the need for both abrasive mixing and high-pressure pumping. In many cases, it was too time consuming to be practical as an "every-well" application, and lower-cost conventional explosive shape-charge perforating seemed sufficient for most wells. As oil and gas prices have drastically increased in recent years, many operators have realized that for some well conditions, the use of hydrajet perforating (HP) can improve fracture stimulation efficiency and well economics. In a few cases HP has proven to be the only way that effective fracture stimulation could be achieved. In the past few years there has been a growing acceptance among both operators and service companies that hydrajet (abrasive jetting) perforating can improve overall well economics for fracture stimulated wells in many reservoirs. Some newer methodologies have combined hydrajet perforating and hydraulic fracturing into a single, continuous, multi-stage stimulation method. For many wells needing multiple fracture stimulations, significant reductions in nonproductive time (NPT) allows for reduced well costs even when more actual fracture stages are pumped. Use of more stages has often provided significant production gains and greater recoverable reserves. Enhanced stimulation success in many moderately hard and very hard formations have proven the value of converting from shape charge perforating to hydrajetting as a stand-alone operation to avoid severe near-wellbore problems during hydraulic fracturing stimulation treatments. Since about 2000, and especially during the most recent 5 years, service providers have progressively expanded the processes, which included hydrajet perforating, especially in conjunction with hydraulic fracturing methods. This paper will review the expanding applications of hydrajet perforating in recent years, including case histories from several global applications. Background Early technical papers tell us that hydrojetting (w/o abrasives) was used with acidizing and fracture acidizing as early as 1939, primarily in zones completed open hole. However, with the incorporation of solid abrasives (hydrajetting, using abrasives) the jetting nozzles in use then could only perform for minutes before excessive erosion became a problem. The literature also reveals that around 1958 there was a renewed interest in sand-jetting and more abrasion-resistant carbide jets were developed. In May, 1961, the Journal of Petroleum Technology included three landmark publications that presented much of what had been happening since 1958 with respect to HP applications, and described other hydrajetting wellbore functions such as jetting cement from casing, cutting casing, scale removal, and other applications. The more extensive of these publications (Brown et al. 1961, and Pittman et al. 1961) had first been presented at technical conferences in October, 1960. The shorter, introductory article (Ousterhout 1961) indicated that by early in 1961 over 5,000 hydrajetting jobs had been performed with a success rate in excess of 90%; more than half of these were perforating applications. At that time, explosive/shape charge perforating was still in its infancy, with bullet perforating still common.
