Advances in mechanical properties of coated fabrics in civil engineering

Abstract: Membrane structures are widely used in large span spatial structures due to excellent mechanical behavior and beautiful forms. Mechanical properties of coated fabrics are an important basis of design, analysis, and construction of membrane structures. This paper gives an overview of the research advances in mechanical properties of coated fabrics. First, the basic mechanical indexes of coated fabrics and corresponding test methods are presented. Then, the existing constitutive relations for coated fabrics are … Show more

“…Sidewalls and roofs of lightweight structures, doors, partitions, wind shields, solar protection, and many other areas of application show a wide range of uses of this technical fabric. One of the factors that promotes the high popularity of PES/PVC‐coated fabric for architectural and construction purposes is its acceptable mechanical and physical properties, advantages and useful results for engineers that have been obtained through extensive studies . However, this use is determined by the life span of a building in addition to other construction specifications and regulations.…”

“…[1][2][3][4] At present, the researchers have made significant progress on the mechanical properties of architectural coated fabrics, including the basic mechanical properties of membranes, environmental impact, and durability. 5 The essence of aeroelastic instability of membrane structure is related to the total damping. [6][7][8] In other words, when the energy generated by wind load is higher than that consumed by membrane structure itself, the aeroelastic instability will occur in membrane structure.…”
