Advances in Nanoparticle Drug Delivery Systems for Anti-Hepatitis B Virus Therapy: A Narrative Review

Abstract: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is an infectious viral disease that is prevalent worldwide. Traditional nucleoside analogues, as well as the novel drug targets against hepatitis B virus (HBV), are associated with certain critical factors that influence the curative effect, such as biological stability and safety, effective drug delivery, and controlled release. Nanoparticle drug delivery systems have significant advantages and have provided a basis for the development of anti-HBV strategies. In this review, we aim t… Show more

“…Additionally, nano drug delivery systems can improve nose-to-brain delivery by protecting encapsulated drugs from biological and chemical degradation and by transporting P-gp efflux proteins across extracellular spaces [11]. Several nano drug delivery systems with specific biochemical properties have been designed to achieve personalized and targeted therapy [12].…”

“…The understanding of the tissue and intracellular environments has enabled the utilization of receptor specific ligands in the design of the nanocarrier systems. 104 Several examples of targeted delivery to hepatocytes have been described 105 Receptor mediated-delivery with high affinity ligands may have advantages of specificity if the receptors are cell-specific. Any nonspecific uptake by scavenger receptors such as those present on Kupffer cells may decrease the efficiency of delievery.…”
