Advances in Surgical and Anesthetic Techniques for Cochlear Implantation

Abstract: Cochlear implantation (CI) is usually performed under general anesthesia using the classic surgical approach, the mastoidectomy posterior tympanotomy approach (MPTA), which was originally described by William House in 1961. Many alternative surgical approaches have been described for CI. Robotic image-guided cochlear implantation has also been described as a new advance in CI. Also, in some situations, CI can be performed under conscious sedation with local anesthesia (CS-LA) instead of general anesthesia (GA)… Show more

“…Similar to HAs, the external component transfers sound from the environment to the internal component, which receives and processes the sound. From the surgical technique to aesthetics, CIs have also undergone significant advances [ 43 , 44 ]. The early models of CIs had only one channel, but research into CIs has led to the development of multichannel devices.…”

“…In previous publications we described the modified EAI for CI, (Wahba's incision), which was first designed by Hassan Wahba's (10) (11) . This incision differs from the extended EAI used in the past at Hannover and Melbourne in many points aiming at reducing the risks of device extrusion and wound related complications that were reported in the classic extended EAI (2) (7) (8).…”
