The measurement function of wind tunnel balances is, according to requirements, to vectorially separate the force vector B i n t o the three x-y-z coordinate force directions, or moments, respectively. State-of-the-art for external balances are strain gage platform balances with computer separation of forces and moments. Based on the experience gained with such balances, a new type of balance has been developed which combines the adventageous features of computer separation with the conceptional advantages of both platform and pyramidal type balances. This allows for a significant reduction of load cells required, for calibration of different datum heights within the test section, and for considerable improvement of measurement accurracy o f roll, pitch and yaw moments.
