Advances in Waterborne Acrylic Resins: Synthesis Principle, Modification Strategies, and Their Applications

Abstract: Waterborne acrylic resin is a kind of environmental protection resin, which is widely used in coatings, bridges, ships, and locomotives. In order to be better used in various fields, modification of waterborne acrylic resin has attracted much attention. In this paper, we introduce the method to synthesize waterborne acrylic resins, the composition of the resin, and basic properties of each monomer. According to the requirements of different properties of the resin, the modification mechanism and methods of the… Show more

“…For the bioester B3 color study was also performed. The ester was introduced in different concentrations (0.1–2%) in an acrylic resin—that is often used in film industry [ 57 , 58 ]. The film was then deposited on a cellulosic support (wood).…”

“…However, with the on-going deterioration of air environmental quality and increasing attention to human health, more and more strict laws and policies on environmental protection have been formulated by governments around the world to control and restrict the discharge of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Therefore, the conventional solvent-based polymeric coatings are seriously suppressed and alternatively replaced by the emerging waterborne-based ones [9].…”

“…In general, the properties of waterborne coating prepared from a single epoxy resin are inferior to that of solvent coating 1–3 . It is known that acrylate emulsion has advantages in terms of anti‐staining property, toughness, and weather resistance 4–6 . In the development of waterborne epoxy resin coatings, the exploitation of the advantages of epoxy resin and acrylate through the generation of epoxy‐acrylate composite emulsion is a hotspot 7–9 …”
