Advances of Endothelial Progenitor Cells in the Development of Depression

Abstract: Depression is a major psychological disease of human beings. With the severity of depression, it elevates the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), especially acute coronary syndrome (ACS), resulting in serious harm to human health. The number of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) is closely related to the development of depression. It has been reported that the number of peripheral blood EPCs in patients with depression was reduced. However, effects on the function of EPCs in depression are still unclear. Th… Show more

“…Such a finding mainly originates from the effects of depressive symptom severity and depressive disorders on the cEPC count (N. Yang et al, 2021). Most findings have shown that lower cEPC numbers are associated with high depressive symptom severity and depressive disorder (N. Yang et al, 2021). However, a contradictory finding has also been reported (Liou et al, 2021 (Fiedorowicz et al, 2012).…”

“…Evidence has suggested that variations in the cEPC count are related to affective symptoms. Such a finding mainly originates from the effects of depressive symptom severity and depressive disorders on the cEPC count (N. Yang et al., 2021 ). Most findings have shown that lower cEPC numbers are associated with high depressive symptom severity and depressive disorder (N. Yang et al., 2021 ).…”

“…Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are the precursor cells of vascular endothelial cells. Under the stimulation of physiological or pathological factors, EPCs can mobilize from bone marrow to peripheral blood to participate in the repair of damaged blood vessels 17 . Studies have shown that EPCs play an important role in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, peripheral vascular diseases, tumor angiogenesis and wound healing via their differentiation and proliferation 18 , 19 .…”
