Advances of wogonin, an extract from Scutellaria baicalensis, for the treatment of multiple tumors

Abstract: As the major bioactive compound of Scutellaria baicalensis that has been approved to be effective as an anti-inflammatory and antiviral inhibitor in cardiovascular diseases, wogonin (WG) showed potent and promising antitumor effects both in vitro and in vivo. It has been proved that WG has the ability to inhibit the growth of tumor cells, induce apoptosis, and suppress angiogenesis. The molecular mechanisms involve reactive oxygen species, Ca2+, NF-κB, tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand, a… Show more

“…In recent years, melanization has again gained attention as a risk factor for melanoma [ 41 ]. Several studies have shown the antitumor effect of wogonin on multiple tumors, including melanomas [ 9 , 10 ]. Zhao et al used in vitro and in vivo assays to show that wogonin inhibits the cell invasion of metastatic melanoma by suppressing the PI3K/AKT and NF-κB pathways [ 42 ].…”

“…S. baicalensis injection is the only herbal medication extract that has been recommended by the Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of HFMD (2012 edition, China). In previous studies, S. baicalensis demonstrated effective anti-inflammatory and antiviral activities in the treatment of cancer and viral infectious diseases [1315]. In addition, previous studies have suggested that these effects of S. baicalensis were associated with the regulation of multiple molecular pathways, including reactive oxygen species, Ca 2+ , nuclear factor- κ B, and tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand [1619].…”

“…Scutellariae Radix, the root of the medicinal plant S. baicalensis, has been widely used for various diseases. S. baicalensis shows many therapeutic effects, including tumor growth inhibition, apoptosis induction, and anti-angiogenesis (Li et al, 2011;Muluye et al, 2014;Wu et al, 2016). Chou et al (2012) reported that the oral administration of QSYQT water extract to Lewis lung cancer cell-bearing mice significantly prevented weight loss without affecting food intake or tumor growth.…”
