Advances on Natural Abietane, Labdane and Clerodane Diterpenes as Anti-Cancer Agents: Sources and Mechanisms of Action

Abstract: Extensive research over the past decades has identified numerous phytochemicals that could represent an important source of anti-cancer compounds. There is an immediate need for less toxic and more effective preventive and therapeutic strategies for the treatment of cancer. Natural compounds are considered suitable candidates for the development of new anti-cancer drugs due to their pleiotropic actions on target events with multiple manners. This comprehensive review highlighted the most relevant findings achi… Show more

“…It is not the first time that corymbulosins, clerodane diterpenes with an isozuelanin skeleton, exhibit this kind of activity, encouraging a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of action. Corymbylosin A, X, and M were highlighted in a recent review concerning the potential anti-cancer activities of diterpenes with abietane, labdane, and clerodane skeletons [ 33 ]. Corymbulosin X, isolated from Anacolasa clarkii exhibits high activity against some pediatric cancer cell lines [ 34 ].…”

“…They are widely found in nature and are defined as compounds having various pharmacological activities ( Kemboi et al., 2021 ). For example, it has been reported by various researchers that diterpenes obtained from the plants belonging to the genus Taxus are used in the treatment of prostate, ovarian, lung, and breast cancer ( Chen et al., 2021 ; Acquaviva et al., 2022 ; Tomiotto-Pellissier et al., 2022 ).…”

“…Chemoprevention is a powerful method to prevent or slow down cancer progression ( Acquaviva et al, 2022 ). In addition, many herbal medicines and related active compounds with potent anticancer activity, such as matrine and honokiol have been used as prophylactic agents.…”
