Advantages of ProSeal™ and SLIPA™ airways over tracheal tubes for gynecological laparoscopies

Abstract: Purpose:To compare the efficacy of the ProSeal LMA TM and SLIPA™ supralaryngeal airways (SLA) with the standard tracheal tube (TT) in 150 consecutive day-case laparoscopic gynecological surgery procedures requiring general anesthesia. Methods: One hundred and fifty patients were randomized into three groups. An identical general anesthesia technique was used in all patients apart from the addition of muscle relaxants and reversal drugs in the TT group. Patients were excluded if there were risk factors for gast… Show more

“…These results are in close agreement with the findings of other studies reporting an insertion success rate of 98% for the SLIPA and 100% for the LMA-ProSeal. 4,8 Unlike the LMA-ProSeal, which has a cuff filled with air to fit the patient's pharynx, the SLIPA has a preformed fixed shape, and, therefore, it is important to choose the correct size. However, the manufacturer's size rule, which involves gender and height, was imprecise, i.e., there was size overlap, and the recommended size was too large in many cases in our pilot study.…”

“…However, the manufacturer's size rule, which involves gender and height, was imprecise, i.e., there was size overlap, and the recommended size was too large in many cases in our pilot study. Therefore, we selected the SLIPA size according to the guidelines of Miller et al 4 There was no significant difference with regard to airway sealing pressure. If anything, the pressure was slightly greater with the SLIPA device than with the LMA-ProSeal.…”

“…The heel of the SLIPA TM is placed in the nasopharynx, providing an additional seal that increases leak pressure. Previous studies have demonstrated that the leak pressure of SLIPA TM (reported means were 27, 1 24, 4 and 30 cm H 2 O) 5 is greater than that of other LMADs (23 cm H 2 O). 2 In conclusion, we believe that SLIPA TM may be more effective than LMAD in difficult airway management, especially in patients whose pharyngeal space is narrow and in whom the PIP is high.…”
