Adverse and beneficial effects in Chinese hamster lung fibroblast cells following radiofrequency exposure

Abstract: In this study, the effect of radiofrequency (RF) exposure to 1950 MHz, Universal Mobile Telecommunication System signal, was investigated in Chinese hamster lung fibroblast cell line (V79). Genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of 20-h exposure at specific absorption rate (SAR) values from 0.15 W/kg to 1.25 W/kg were measured by means of cytokinesis-block micronucleus (MN) assay. Exposure was carried out blinded under strictly controlled conditions of dosimetry and temperature. The effect of RF exposure alone at fou… Show more

“…Recently, Sannino et al ( 42 ) looked at mitomycin C-induced chromosomal fragility in peripheral lymphocytes from 12 MRI workers whose exposure was limited to movement in the SMF. They found a high worker-to-worker variability, but no specific exposure assessment was done with regard to these effects.…”

“…Most of them refers to RF, but data on extremely low frequencies have also been reported 1719 . Concerning RF, the phenomenon has been observed both at frequencies and signals in use for telecommunications (900–1950 MHz; continuous wave, GSM, UMTS signals) 1,10,2023 and at extremely high frequencies (42.2 GHz) 24 . In all cases, pre-exposure significantly reduced the damage induced by a large variety of chemical and physical agents with different action mechanisms.…”

“…The exposure of SH-SY5Y cell cultures to 1950 MHz, UMTS electromagnetic field was completed by means of a well-established set-up, specifically designed and realized to gain highly controlled electromagnetic and environmental conditions, as widely reported in our previous papers 10,12,39 .…”

“…As such, people are continuously exposed to such non-ionizing radiation: although it cannot produce charged ions when passing through human body, it can induce charge movements which can affect active transport across cell membranes, cause oxidative stress and interfere with DNA [1][2][3][4][5]. Although the scientific debate concerning adverse health effects of EMFs has been developed for many years, today controversial results still occur [6][7][8].…”
