“…Furthermore, as shown in Supplementary Table S2, the ACE total score was also significantly correlated with depressed mood (r = .40 [.24, 54], p < .0001) and anxious feeling (r = .21 [.03, 37], p = .025). These observations indicate high convergence validity of the ACE measure in the current study as compared with previous studies (Anda et al, 2006;Lee et al, 2020;Michl et al, 2013a).…”

“…Following the experimental task, participants filled out a demographic survey and a package of self-report questionnaires capturing their early-life stress and neglect during childhood, as well as their recent mood states using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scales. As shown in previous research, ACEs should be correlated with neglect during childhood, depressed mood, and anxious feelings (Anda et al, 2006;Dong, Anda, Dube, Giles, & Felitti, 2003;Lee et al, 2020;Michl, McLaughlin, Shepherd, & Nolen-Hoeksema, 2013b).…”

“…Anxiety disorders can be further classified into generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorders, post‐traumatic stress disorder and phobic disorders depending upon the symptoms appearing and biological alterations (Coyle & Balu, 2018; Khan & Khan, 2017). For different kinds of anxiety disorders, the risk factors vary but some of general risk factors involved in occurrence and progression of anxiety disorders include genetics (Ressler, 2020), gender (Davison et al., 2020), chronic mental disorders (Riesel et al., 2019), separation from closed ones (Cao et al., 2020), adverse events in childhood (Lee et al., 2020), less education, impaired subjective health (Tamayo Martínez et al., 2016), stressful life events (Kingsbury et al., 2020), physical limitations in daily activities (Scott et al., 2016) and neuroticism (Paulus et al., 2016).…”

“…The ACEs-anxiety association in adolescents has been well documented (Clark et al, 2010 ; Cuffe et al, 2005 ). For example, recent studies using data from 2016–2017 National Survey of Children’s Health of the United States found that all ACE measures were significantly associated with higher odds of anxiety (Elmore & Crouch, 2020 ), and children and adolescents with multiple ACEs were most likely to have anxiety symptoms (Lee et al, 2020 ). The above findings provided evidence to suggest that ACE is a risk factor underlying the development of anxiety in adolescents.…”
