“…The need for speed is understandable, but it comes with risks: specifically, the vaccine candidates that are most capable of rapid production on the required massive scale may not be the most effective, and there are concerns that immune responses to COVID-19 vaccines could enhance infection or exacerbate disease in individuals who become infected despite vaccination. These topics have been raised in multiple perspectives and reviews in recent weeks ( 1 12 ). Here, we attempt to address key subjects in greater detail, with an emphasis on quantitative aspects of antibody-based immune responses to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).…”

“…Despite the limitations of this study, our findings clearly suggest that governments and regulators should carefully consider the level of evidence required for vaccines to be granted marketing authorization, even if this prolongs clinical trial programs. Fast approvals of vaccines that result in suboptimal immunization of the general public may risk losing the public’s trust in policy decisions [ 23 ].…”

“…Rushing development and endorsement of a COVID-19 vaccine before establishing efficacy and safety could endanger not only recipients, but also the uptake of current safe vaccines. 68 However, holding off on vaccine use while completing studies will be stressful for both doctors and families. Pediatricians will need to help design studies in ways that minimize risk and generate useful data as quickly as possible, and then help families to understand the choices that they face.…”
