Adverse donor reaction during and after plateletpheresis in a tertiary care centre

Abstract: Background: Plateletpheresis is the process of collecting platelets, a component of blood involved in blood clotting. The term specifically refers to the method of collecting the platelets, which is performed by a device used in blood donation that separate the platelets and return other portion of blood to the donor. Platelet transfusion can be a life-saving procedure in preventing and treating serious complications from bleeding and haemorrhage in patients having disorders manifesting as thrombocytopenia lik… Show more

“…Both of these were managed conservatively and none of the donor needed hospitalization as in [ Table 1]. In the present study, the adverse effect on donors during plateletpheresis was 2% which is similar to study done by Joseph et al, [10] (2.67%).While the studies conducted by Dogra et al, [11] and Kajal et al, [12] had 4.59%and 6% adverse effect during plateletphersis donation which is higher than present study.…”

“…We reported an incidence of 1.5% adverse events in plateletaphaeresis procedure. This falls within the acceptable range reported in other studies [5] while higher incidence (6.06%) ed by Khajuria K et al [7]. These complications vary according to the donor profile and machine system.…”

“…Adverse events encountered were noted and categorized. Gupta et al; IBRR, 9(4): 1-6, 2019; Article no.IBRR.50121 2 Results: A total number of 1600 Plateletpheresis procedures were conducted to prepare SDP and transfused to 1054 patients. A total of 24 out of 1600 plateletaphaeresis procedures reported adverse events (1.5%).…”

“…Additionaly, platelet donors are selected not only on the basis of general criteria for whole blood donation, but also on the basis of specially defined criteria for plateletpheresis. The results concerning the total number of platelet donors who had some type of adverse events (8.68%) presented in the study are slightly more frequent than literature data (6.06%) which confirm that plateletpheresis, although invasive, is relatively well tolerated 16 . The fact identified in the study indirectly indicates on the possibility of the donors safety level improvement.…”
