Adverse drug reaction monitoring with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors: A prospective, randomized, open-label, comparative study

Abstract: Objectives:Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) are known to possess different chemical structures, and change in structure of a drug can bring about change in its adverse drug reaction (ADR) profile. The study aims to observe the incidence and severity of ADRs between the di-carboxyl group containing ACEIs (d-ACEIs) versus phosphonate group containing ACEIs (p-ACEIs), in patients suffering from essential hypertension.Materials and Methods:One hundred and twenty patients with essential hypertension… Show more

“…Lisinopril is commonly prescribed for the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure 40 , 41 . The side effects of this ACEI are usually mild to moderate in therapeutic doses, the most serious being dry cough, angioedema, and hyperkalemia 41 , 42 . Of these potentially serious side effects, only cough was reported in this study, and it was the seventh most frequently encountered adverse event.…”

“…Several molecular docking and simulation studies were used to predict the efficiency of binding of the ligand with macromolecules [30][31][32][33][34][35] . The ACE inhibitors such as captopril, lisinopril, enalapril, ramipril and perindopril have shown common side effects such as headache, dizziness, cough, low blood pressure, hypotension, nausea, and angioedema [36][37][38] . Since Momordica charantia is considered as a novel plant with diverse applications in food industry as well as in the therapy of many diseases such as diabetes and atherosclerosis.…”

“…58 However, in an Indian ADR monitoring study, phosphoryl group-containing ACEIs (fosinopril) were associated with a higher incidence of cough compared with carboxyl group-containing ACEIs (enalapril, lisinopril, and ramipril). 59 It is reasonable to use ACEIs that induce cough less frequently. In this context, perindopril has been associated with a relatively low incidence of cough and has extensive evidence supporting its cardiovascular benefits and tolerability.…”
