Adverse drug reaction: rosuvastatin as a cause for ischaemic colitis in a 64-year-old woman

Abstract: Rosuvastatin (Crestor, AstraZeneca) is a commonly used drug for managing hypercholesterolaemia. It is a very safe medication with mostly acceptable side effects. Rare but serious side effects are not well known. A 64-year-old woman presented with bloody diarrhoea after starting rosuvastatin for hypercholesterolaemia. Stool microscopy and culture ruled out infective causes. Abdominal CT scan revealed normal calibre celiac axis and superior mesenteric artery. Colonoscopic biopsy revealed ischaemic colitis as the… Show more

“…Overall, our findings raise the hypothesis that the safety profile of RYR is similar to synthetic statins: myopathies (myalgia, CK and transaminases elevation [48][49][50][51]), cutaneous reactions, gastrointestinal and liver reactions emerged as a potential safety signals of RYR and have been reported as not uncommon adverse reactions associated with statins [52][53][54][55]. These data are also in line with cases collected from WHO-Vigibase and reports received by the ANSES French Agency, where muscle-and liver-related ARs were largely reported with RYR [30].…”

“…24 Several adverse effects of statins already were described, including a case of ischemic colitis. 25 In our study, we observed that statins are part of the normal pharmacological profile of patients.…”

“…Statin medications are widely used for their lipid‐lowering capabilities via inhibition of 5‐hydroxy‐3‐methylglutaryl‐coenzyme A (HMG‐CoA) reductase. Both rosuvastatin and simvastatin have been associated with mild episodes of colon ischaemia . While no exact mechanism for statin‐induced colon ischaemia has been described, it is believed that this class of drugs has no direct vasoactive properties, but patients on statins do have increased lipid levels and likely have peripheral vascular disease.…”
