Adverse effects of chronic ammonia stress on juvenile oriental river prawn (Macrobrachium nipponense) and alteration of glucose and ammonia metabolism

Abstract: Ammonia is one of the common stress factors in aquaculture. However, the effect of chronic ammonia exposure in juvenile oriental river prawn (Macrobrachium nipponense) is currently unexplored. This study explored the effects of chronic ammonia on juvenile healthy oriental river prawns. Fifty prawns (0.123 ± 0.003 g) were exposed to 0, 5, and 15 mg/L total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) in triplicates for 28 days. The effects of chronic ammonia challenge were evaluated on growth, antioxidant capacity, hepatopancreas an… Show more

“…However, industrial pollution, high‐density culture resulting in water pollution, and stress from various environmental factors have led to the destruction of its suitable ecological habitat (Bouwman et al, 2011; Chang et al, 2020). These factors have slowed growth of prawns, lowered immunity, and caused disease outbreaks, which impair their healthy development in aquaculture (Foss et al, 2003; Mohapatra et al, 2013; Wei et al, 2023; Zhang, Hou, et al, 2019; Zhang, Xia, et al, 2019). Among the many environmental factors, ammonia is one of the common stressors (Pan et al, 2017; Kong et al, 2022; Wei et al, 2023).…”
