Incidence of local complications and risk factors associated with peripheral intravenous catheter in neonates * Extracted from the dissertation "Complicações relacionadas ao uso do cateter intravenoso periférico em neonatos", Universidade Federal do Paraná, 2013. ABSTRACT Objective:To evaluate the incidence of complications related to the use of peripheral intravenous catheter in neonates and identify the associated risk factors. Method: Prospective cohort study conducted in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Participants were the hospitalized neonates undergoing peripheral intravenous puncture in the period from February to June 2013. Results: The incidence of complications was 63.15%, being infiltration/extravasation (69.89%), phlebitis (17.84%) and obstruction (12.27%). The risk factors were the presence of infection (p = 0.0192) and weight at the puncture day (p = 0.0093), type of intermittent infusion associated with continuous infusion (p <0.0001), endotracheal intubation (p = 0.0008), infusion of basic plan (p = 0.0027), total parenteral nutrition (P = 0.0002), blood transfusion associated with other infusions (p = 0.0003) and other drugs (p = 0.0004). Higher risk of developing complications in the first 48 hours after puncture. Conclusion: A high rate of complications related to the use of peripheral intravenous catheter, and risk factors associated with infection, weight, drugs and infused solutions, and type of infusion. Objectives: to identify the perception of nursing professionals on human errors in nursing care at a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and to assess Best Practices strategies proposed by these professionals for patient safety in nursing care. Methods: this is a quantitative-qualitative, descriptive study. Setting: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Participants: 22 nursing professionals. Data collection was performed through interviews and sent to the thematic analysis. Results: human errors in nursing care, such as wasted catheters; errors in the medication process; causes for error in nursing care, with a focus on work overload; Best Practices for patient safety in nursing care, such as professional training and improved working conditions. Conclusions: it is of utmost importance to invest in Best Practices strategies for Patient Safety, aimed at consolidating the culture of organizational safety and encouraging an adequate environment to manage errors.

RECONSIDERING PATIENT SAFETY AT NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNITS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW ABSTRACT:The objective was to get to know adverse events and care practices for the purpose of patient safety at a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Systematic review using the following descriptors: Patient Safety; Intensive Care Units, Neonatal; Adverse events. Study developed between September 2015and February 2016. Eighty-four articles were found in three databases between 2006 and 2015. After applying the screening and eligibility criteria, nine articles were selected. The analysis of the articles revealed that adverse events take place at the Neonatal Intensive Care Units, which are attributed to different factors. The actions mentioned to prevent the adverse events were continuing education, training and an increasing number of professionals, support from management, knowledge strengthening and team commitment. In conclusion, the most noteworthy adverse events were related to medication, respiratory infections and non-programmed extubations. The main factors contributing to error were excessive workloads, lack of professionals and resources and an unfavorable work environment.
