Adverse obstetric outcome in women with a history of infertility: A retrospective study

Abstract: Women with a history of infertility are associated with a higher incidence of adverse pregnancy outcome. This retrospective study reviewed 105 women with a known history of infertility; of these 105 women, 77 (73%) conceived spontaneously and 28 (27%) had assisted conception. Our finding confirms higher perinatal complications; relative ratios (RR) for pre-eclampsia was 4.6 (95% CI=2.1-9.9), intrauterine growth restriction 4.8 (95% CI=1.9-12.0), gestational diabetes 1.8 (95% CI=0.5-5.8), pre-term premature rup… Show more

“…For example, they have an increased rate of miscarriage (McManus & McClure, 2002), vaginal bleeding (Ochsenkühn et al, 2003), antepartum hemorrhage, and placenta previa (Thomson, Shanbhag, Templeton, & Bhattacharya, 2005). The incidence of preeclampsia is also more common following assisted conception (Thomson et al, 2005;Yasmin, Hassan, Vanga, Subramanium, & Adeghe, 2006) and is more likely to occur in women who have polycystic ovarian disease (Kashyap & Claman, 2000).…”

“…A history of infertility has been identified [4,5] as an independent predictor of obstetric and perinatal complications. Underlying infertility (time to pregnancy of ≥1 year) is strongly correlated with increased complications throughout pregnancy, including spontaneous miscarriage [6], ectopic pregnancy [6], preterm delivery [7,8], LBW [7,9], IUGR [8], PET [8,9], placenta previa [7], placental abruption [7], GDM [8], PPROM [8], caesarean section [7], stillbirth [6], and PMR [10]. These correlations persist even after statistical adjustment for maternal age [6,7,9,11], parity [6,7,11], prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) [9], and smoking status [12].…”
