Adverse perinatal outcome in patients with an abnormal umbilical coiling index

Abstract: Hypocoiled cords can be predictors of potential interventional delivery and intrapartum FHR disturbances. Hypercoiled cords are associated with an increased incidence of premature delivery and maternal cocaine use.

“…4,11 In present study, 60% of babies in hypercoiled group had birth weight <2.5kgs and none from hypocoiled group had birth weight <2.5kgs, which was statistically significant (p value <0.001). Similar association between hypercoiling and low birth weight was seen in studies conducted by Rana J et al and Raio L et al 6,12 In present study percentage of NICU admission was more (40%) in both hypocoiled and hypercoiled groups as compared to normocoiled group. Dakshayini D et al also observed higher NICU admission in both hypocoiled and hypercoiled groups as compared to normocoiled group.…”

“…3,6,5 In present study meconium staining of amniotic fluid was significantly associated with UCI <10th percentile (hypocoiling) with p value <0.05. Similarly, Gupta S et al, Padmanabhan LD et al and Tripathy S conducted studies and found that in hypocoiling group, meconium staining was significantly higher than those with normocoiling group.…”

“…Rana and Ebert [7] concluded that hypercoiling is associated with an increased incidence of premature delivery. de Laat and Nikkels [8] demonstrated that both overcoiling and undercoiling were associated with preterm births.…”

“…Rana and Ebert [7] concluded that hypocoiled coils can be predictors of potential interventional delivery and intrapartum FHR disturbances. Predanic and Perni [4] found that a non-reassuring foetal status in labour was observed in 25.7 % of foetuses with abnormal coiling compared to 11 % of foetuses with normal coiling (p = 0.007).…”
