Aeromobility and Work

Abstract: IntroductionBoth Danish and international statistics show that, during recent decades, air traffic and international work-related trips have increased significantly. Thanks to the more aggressive impact of CO 2 emissions in the higher strata of the atmosphere, the threat to the global climate from aeroplane emissions has become more serious than the threat from emissions of vehicles which travel the same distances at surface level

“…The emphasis of these gatherings is clearly on face-to-face (F2F) proximity. Similar to the research of Lassen (2006) on academics at Aalborg University, the largest share of trips in this category is undertaken for conference travel; (ii) foreign project work, or the often labour-intensive and longer-term activities at specific places or in particular time periods. The need to travel very much derives from what Urry (2007) calls face-to-place and face-to-time proximity.…”

“…Not unlike other institutions of higher education and research, there is no central office in charge of the travel management of UGent academics (see also Lassen, 2006). This implies that international travel is not covered by official policies or even general rules, which leaves senior academics at UGent a high degree of freedom and flexibility.…”

“…Corporate travellers have very specific needs with regard to the tangible aspects of travel as these relate to air transportation, accommodation and technology (Douglas, 2005;Lubbe, 2003;Mason, 2002;Lehman & Niles, 2001;Denstadli, 2004). In addition, they also have intangible needs referred to in this research as psychological needs (Gustafson, 2006;Lassen, 2006;Travmed, 2001 andWeinreb, 2002), which include the elimination of unnecessary trips, avoidance of travel during weekends, and formally approved time off after business trips.…”
