Aeromonas Salmonicida as a causative agent for postoperative endophthalmitis

Abstract: We report a case of a 55-year-old female who presented with pain, redness, and profound visual loss in her right eye 2 weeks after cataract surgery. An ophthalmic examination showed light perception vision, corneal edema with severe anterior chamber reaction and hypopyon, exudative membranes on the anterior lens surface, and dense vitreous exudates. Under the impression of acute postoperative exogenous endophthalmitis, immediate pars plana vitrectomy with culture of vitreous aspirate and intravitreal antibioti… Show more

“…To the best of our knowledge, no systemic reports were regarding the isolation of A. salmonicida from clinical samples in China. Previous case reports have linked A. salmonicida to postoperative endophthalmitis, bacteremia and diarrhea 32,34,35. Instead, this present study uncovered that A. salmonicida was frequently isolated from sputum, hinting it as a potential causative pathogen to nosocomial pneumonia.…”

“…Few are the cases of the isolation of A. salmonicida from samples of clinical origin. Aeromonas salmonicida has been previously isolated from blood samples from patients with typical symptoms of bacterial sepsis [39] and postoperative endophthalmitis [40]. Even though the strains were mainly of intestinal origin, they were also isolated from patients with other diagnoses (other than gastroenteritis), such as septic conditions, renal failure, urinary tract infection, and tissue lesions.…”

“…The organism is a facultative oxidase positive and Gram-negative low virulence bacillus, commonly found in water and soil. However, in recent years due to the use of improved techniques for isolation and identification of bacteria from biological specimens such as BACTT/ALERT and Vitek 2-compact system, there have been numerous reports of various human and animal infections caused by Aeromonas spp , mainly from Asian countries [[2], [3], [4]]. The most common manifestations of infection with Aeromonas include gastroenteritis, bacteremia, and soft tissue infections [3].…”
