Aerosol Direct Radiative Effect Sensitivity Analysis

Abstract: Both to reconcile the large range in satellite-based estimates of the aerosol direct radiative effect (DRE) and to optimize the design of future observing systems, this study builds a framework for assessing aerosol DRE uncertainty. Shortwave aerosol DRE radiative kernels (Jacobians) were derived using the MERRA-2 reanalysis data. These radiative kernels give the differential response of the aerosol DRE to perturbations in the aerosol extinction coefficient, aerosol single-scattering albedo, aerosol asymmetry … Show more

“…The dust extinction coefficient, single-scattering albedo (SSA), and asymmetry factor vary as a function of the dust size and composition, and these parameters were taken from the lookup table of Randles et al (2017). The dust aerosols were assumed to be well mixed within each layer of the modeled atmosphere; the overall extinction coefficients, SSAs, and asymmetry factors were calculated following Equations A1-A3 of Thorsen et al (2020).…”

“…Similar to the analysis of Thorsen et al (2020), the size of the perturbation is chosen as an 1 % increase to the base value (δx = 0.01x). These approximated partial derivatives will be computed for GHI, DNI and REari and referred as irradiance kernels and REari kernel, respectively.…”

“…Alternatively, high-quality AOD obtained at high temporal scales are needed for process-oriented studies 27 , 28 and radiative closure experiments with the main goal to determine the precision with which a radiative transfer model can predict both direct and diffuse irradiances 29 , 30 . Finally, information on the uncertainty of the measured AOD is critical for the aerosol radiative forcing and its error estimation 31 – 33 .…”
