“…11 Analgosedation is a necessary practice in ICUs to achieve patient comfort and pain relief, reduce their anxiety, and allow them to rest without interfering with medical and nursing care. 1 However, adequate levels of sedation are not always easy to achieve in all critically ill patients, and sedation misuse could impact negatively on their outcome during and after ICU admission. 12 In 2008, the analgosedation working group of the Sociedad Española de Medicina Intensiva, Crítica y Unidades Coronarias (SEMICYUC), defined the term "difficult sedation" (DS) as situations of tolerance, therapeutic failure (the inability to obtain the desired sedation level after the maximum dosage allowed), or withdrawal symptoms to the sedatives used (this can lead to symptoms such as restlessness, muscle shaking, insomnia, anxiety, and in extreme cases, hallucinations and delirium) establishing clear criteria to achieve its diagnosis.…”
