AFLP analysis of genetic relationships among the cultivated eggplant, Solanummelongena L., and wild relatives (Solanaceae)

Abstract: The AFLP technique of DNA analysis was evaluated as a tool for assessing genetic relationships among the cultivated eggplant, S. melongena, and related species [Solanum L. subgenus Leptostemonum (Dunal) Bitter, section Melongena (Mill.) Dunal, series Incaniformia Bitter]. Genetic distances based on the AFLP data were estimated for 49 samples of 36 distinct accessions. Phenetic trees were constructed using Jaccard's coefficient and UPGMA, and other clustering methods: they all had very high co-phenetic correlat… Show more

“…This observation is in agreement with the findings of Mace et al (1999), andIsshiki et al (2008). These workers used AFLP markers to determine the taxonomic position of S. dasyphyllum and S. macrocarpon both of series Macrocarpa outside section Melongena which comprises S. melongena.…”

“…The genus Solanum, having both tuberiferous and nontubeiferous species, is mostly American in distribution. Historical and modern attempts of eggplant and its relatives" classification were in detail presented by Mace et al (1999). The historical difficulties and confusions connected with Solanum species classification is reflected by the fact that 1000-1400 Solanum species have been described under more than 3000 binominal names (Daunay & Lester 1988).…”

“…Cluster analyses were performed in TREECON 1.3b (Van der Peer and De Watcher 1994) using Nei and Li's (1979) dissimilarity coefficient and UPGMA (unweighted pair-group method using arithmetic averages). In comparative studies, the combination of these methods resulted in the best fit of the tree to the distance matrix, expressed by the highest cophenetic correlation (Mace et al 1999;Koopman et al 2001). Support values for the nodes in the trees were calculated in 1,000 bootstrap replicates.…”
