Nowadays road construction is rapidly increasing on-demand to meet several medium and long terms development programs. A huge amount of natural resources, types of machinery and fuels are used in road construction. Using material resources and fuel an efficient manner, reducing in emission of greenhouse gases and controlling various impacts on the environment are important tasks in the road construction industry. In the present research, several environmental impacts related to the construction of asphalt paved highways in Ethiopia have been determined using the Life Cycle Assessment Approach for common pavement materials and construction activities. A deep focus has been given towards the extraction and processing of sand and gravel for preparation of base and sub-base; transportation of these input raw materials; consumption of fuels by various road construction machinery; direct or indirect emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants to atmosphere etc. Various suitable methods have been used to calculate the impacts of raw materials, fuel and machinery on various categories such as global warming potential, ozone depletion potential, terrestrial acidification potential, freshwater eutrophication, freshwater ecotoxicity etc. From the investigation, it has been suggested to use recycled materials for substituting gravel as base or sub-base materials and biodiesel for substituting diesel in the transportation trucks and dumpers. These types of new recycled materials may greatly help in assisting the evaluation of sustainable pavement construction. The present case study may help for potential changes in asphalt pavement construction to improve environmental sustainability.

Climate change is a global challenge to ecosystem services, altering crop yields and food security worldwide. In the context of climate change, Onobrychis viciifolia Scop. (sainfoin) can offer a multitude of ecosystem services conferred by its multifaceted beneficial properties. We reviewed the morphological, biochemical and physiological responses to environmental stressors of O. viciifolia, summarized its ecological, agronomic, nutritional and biological interests, and we discussed its use under climate change. Onobrychis viciifolia is a hemicryptophyte forage legume adapted to arid and semiarid regions by evolving a diverse array of protective mechanisms against abiotic stressors at morphological, biochemical and physiological levels. In the present scenario of climate change, O. viciifolia has desirable forage characteristics such as high nutritive value, high voluntary intake and palatability to grazing animals, leading to satisfying animal performance for milk, meat, honey and wool production. Recent studies suggest that O. viciifolia has several highly beneficial phytochemical properties including condensed tannins and polyphenol content, which have been demonstrated to have anthelmintic activities, enhance protein utilization, and prevent bloating. In addition, O. viciifolia also has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sequestrate atmospheric carbon and nitrogen into the soil. Ethnobotanical investigations show that O. viciifolia possesses antimicrobial, antiseptic and vulnerary activities. This review could be helpful for understanding of O. viciifolia characteristics, interests and uses, thus promoting its reasonable cultivation under a changing climate.

Optimum Biodiesel Production from African Oil Bean Seed Oil Using Antelope Bones and Africa Oil Bean Seed Pod as Catalyst: RSM and ANN as Optimization Tools

Heterogeneous catalyst developed from antelope bones and African oil bean seed pod was used for the production of biodiesel from African oil bean seed oil (AOBSO) characterized by 2.22% free fatty acid (FFA) via transesterification reaction. Characterization showed that the catalyst had high surface area (40.65m2 /g) and large pore diameter (50.85 ?) with CaO being its main constituent. Four independent process variables were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The optimization result revealed that a maximum biodiesel yield of 93.25% was achieved using RSM at an optimum condition of temperature (60oC), time (86 minutes), methanol:oil ratio (12:1) and catalyst loading (2 wt.%). Also, using ANN modelling, an optimum yield of 95% was obtained at a temperature, time, methanol:oil ratio and catalyst loading of 57oC, 57 minutes, 7.5:1 and 1 wt.% respectively. The result shows that ANN was better tool at modelling the process because of its higher R2 value and lower RMSE value. Also, the high yield of biodiesel obtained showed that African oil bean seed oil (AOBSO) which is a low-cost feedstock have the potential to be used for biodiesel production.
