Age and Growth of Alien Fish Species, Cyprinus carpio var. communis (Common Carp) in the Lower Stretch of the Yamuna River at Allahabad

Abstract: Present investigation was carried out on the fish samples of river Yamuna from Sadiapur fish landing centre during January 2008-December 2009. Studies were undertaken to assess the age composition, growth rate and age pyramid of Cyprinus carpio var. communis. Age composition varied from 0 to 13? age groups. The maximum growth was recorded at 1? year (20.69 cm) and minimum at the 9? year (3.01 cm) of the life cycle. Growth of C. carpio was higher than that of recorded in Europe and Australia. According to perce… Show more

“…Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) are exotic/alien fish species for India. Both species are of great economic importance in the country [16][17][18], and are commercially exploited in the Ganga River (at Kanpur to Varanasi section) and its tributaries [13,[19][20][21]. Fishes are widely used to evaluate the health of aquatic ecosystems because pollutants are building up in the food chain and are responsible for adverse effects and death in the aquatic systems.…”

“…Native species are always supportive to stable the biodiversity of water bodies. Fishes are mainly threatened by channelization of rivers/streams beds, changes of food web and invasion of non-native species [25,75].…”

“…Fishing pressure and fishing style (example degree) are also responsible for decreasing of age, size of fishes and recruitment (example damage breeding ground) in lotic ecosystems [41][42][43][44][45][46]. These factors are significantly altered to food security policy [47,48] and abundance [49][50][51][52].…”
