Age and growth of the hollowsnout grenadier, Caelorinchus caelorhincus (Risso, 1810), in the Aegean Sea

Abstract: Age and growth of the hollowsnout grenadier was studied based on samples collected seasonally in the Agean Sea between March 2003 and January 2004. Total length ranged from 9.0 to 21.6 cm. Length-weight relationship was described as a ¼ 0.0032, and b ¼ 3.008. Age determinations based on otolith readings were between 1 and 10 years. The von Bertalanffy growth curve fitted to observed lengths-at-age provided parameters of L ¥ ¼ 24.9 cm, k ¼ 0.115 and t o ¼ )3.494.

“…This information allowed us comparisons only with S. diaspros , whose WLR shows corresponding negative allometric pattern in Sangun et al., . C. coelorhynchus showed different allometric patterns as those reported in other Mediterranean sub‐regions (Aegean and Adriatic Sea) by Ungaro, Vlora, Marano, Rivas, & Modica, ; Filiz & Bilge, and Filiz et al., ; whereas no references are available in the eastern Mediterranean. No references whatsoever are reported on Fishbase website (Froese & Pauly, ) on S. elongata .…”

“…Age data provide valuable information on the life history of fish species; however, age determination reliability is generally based on the size of the samples studied and interpretation of the growth rings on the otoliths (Filiz et al., ). Our range (1–5 years) is within longevity limits observed by Allam () of 1–5 years (n = 421), with the 3‐year age group numerically dominant; El‐Haweet et al.…”

“…A final total of 932 was read on the major axis of the proximal surface (longitudinal plane) by four independent readers. When unanimity was not reached among the readers, the specimens were thus not included in the growth calculations (Filiz et al., ). Length–weight relationships were determined for males and females according to the equation W = a L b , where W is total weight (g), L the total length (cm), the parameters a and b were calculated by functional regression, as was the coefficient of determination ( r ²).…”

“…Known from the Mediterranean coasts of Turkey (Bilecenoǧlu et al., 2002), age and growth of the hollowsnout grenadier in Turkish Aegean waters are given in Filiz et al. (2006), and its food habits in Sever et al.…”
