Purpose: To investigate the difference of MR percent breast density measured from fat-suppressed versus nonfat-suppressed imaging sequences. Methods: Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with and without fat suppression was acquired from 38 subjects. Breasts were divided into subgroups of different morphological patterns ("central" and "intermingled" types). Breast volume, fibroglandular tissue volume, and percent density were measured. The results were compared using nonparametric statistical tests and regarded as significant at p < 0.05. Results: Breast volume, fibroglandular volume, and percent density between fat-suppressed and nonfat-suppressed sequences were highly correlated. Breast volumes measured on these two sequences were almost identical. Fibroglandular tissue volume and percent density, however, had small (<5%) yet significant differences between the two sequences-they were both higher on the fat-suppressed sequence. Intraobserver variability was within 4% for both sequences and different morphological types. The fibroglandular tissue volume measured on downsampled images showed a small (<5%) yet significant difference. Conclusions: The measurement of breast density made on MRI acquired using fat-suppressed and nonfat-suppressed T1W images was about 5% difference, only slightly higher than the intraobserver variability of 3%-4%. When the density data from multiple centers were to be combined, evaluating the degree of difference is needed to take this difference into account.

Background: A dense breast not only reduces the sensitivity of mammography but also is a moderate independent risk factor for breast cancer. The percentage of Western women with fat breast tissue is higher aged 40 years or older. To a certain extent, mammography as a first choice of screening imaging method for Western women of this group is reasonable. Hitherto, the frequency and age distribution of mammographic breast density patterns among Chinese women had not been characterized. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency and age distribution of mammographic breast density patterns among a group of Chinese screening women and breast cancer patients in order to provide useful information for age-specific guidelines for breast cancer screening in Chinese women. Methods: A retrospective review of a total of 3,394 screening women between August and December 2009 and 2,527 breast cancer patients between July 2011 and June 2012 was conducted. Descriptive analyses were used to examine the association between age and breast density. The significance of differences of breast density between the screening women and the breast cancer patients was examined using nonparametric tests. Results: There was a significant inverse relationship between age and breast density overall (r=-0.37, p< 0.01). Breast density of the breast cancer patients in the subgroups of 40-49 years old was greater compared with that of the screening women, the same in those aged 50-54 years and in those 55 years old or older, less than in the screening group. Conclusions: With regard to the Chinese women younger than 55 years old, the diagnostic efficiency of breast cancer screening imaging examinations may be potentially improved by combining screening mammography with ultrasound.

Continuous monitoring of breast cancer is a vital step in the treatment plan of a breast cancer survivor who has an 11-20% risk of recurrence and a 3x-4x chance of developing breast cancer in a different location within the breast. This study proposes electromagnetic (EM) absorption loss measurements as a cost-effective method which has the potential to replace the rudimentary and inaccurate breast selfexamination and complement the traditional X-ray mammography exams, which are cost-prohibitive and carry radiation exposure risk. A breast cancer survivor can continuously monitor the health of her breast by periodically comparing absorption loss measurements to a reference absorption loss measurement taken after a lumpectomy. Results show successful detection of tumors at different locations within the breast with just a 3-element phased array.
