Age at Onset Typology in Opioid‐dependent Men: An Exploratory Study from India

Abstract: This study attempted to apply age at onset typology in ICD-10-diagnosed opioid dependence. The sample is comprised of eighty men seeking treatment at an addiction clinic in India. The measures included a sociodemographic and clinical profile, Severity of Opioid Dependence Questionnaire, Sensation Seeking Scale, Multiphasic Personality Questionnaire (MPQ), and Family History Assessment Module. Application of k-means cluster analysis led to the emergence of two cluster types: early onset (mean age at onset 21 ye… Show more

“…This suggests that the study sample was representative of de‐addiction clinic populations in India. The age of our patients is also similar to that reported by previous studies on sexual dysfunction in opioid‐dependent patients [38–42].There was no significant difference between the OD patients and the HCs for sociodemographic variables except that the control group had more subjects who were employed and with higher family income. Thus, difference in the prevalence of sexual dysfunction cannot be attributed to the sociodemographic variables.…”

“…Various evidence indicated that those profiles may be features of OUD severity. For example, opioid-dependent men with an early onset age had a greater severity of opioid dependence [35]; meanwhile, significantly reduced brain activity to heroin-related minus neural cues in the bilateral cortical caudate with long-term MMT and higher total methadone consumption improved heroin-craving response [36]. In this study, we hypothesized that those opioid profiles could affect addiction, and microRNAs may play a role in the phenomenon.…”
