Age Dependency of Myocardial Triglyceride Content: A 3T High-Field 1H-MR Spectroscopy Study

Abstract: Purpose: The role of myocardial triglyceride (mTG) content in the aging human heart is not entirely understood. The aim of this study was to measure concentrations of mTG content from healthy volunteers and to determine the association between age, mTG content and systolic heart function. Furthermore, the technical stability of the 1H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) and the reliability of peak evaluation at 3?T were evaluated. Materials and Methods: The total study population of 47 healthy volunteers… Show more

“…Results in the age-matched controls were in line with previous literature [38, 39]. To address diurnal changes of TG/W, subjects and patients were scanned during afternoon hours and with a prior fasting period of about 3 h [40].…”

“…Several studies suggest that myocardial triglyceride content increases with age (Petritsch et al., 2015 ; Sarma et al., 2013 ; van der Meer, Rijzewijk et al., 2008 ); however, the total sample size available to support this conclusion is relatively small, with very few reports measuring myocardial triglyceride content in individuals >65 years of age. Sex does not appear to influence myocardial triglyceride content in young, normal weight, healthy adults (Oneglia et al., 2023 ; Petritsch et al., 2016 ; Winhofer et al., 2012 ); however, the interaction between sex and metabolic dysfunction/disease has not been thoroughly investigated.…”

“…In Germany and internationally the number of MRI examinations is increasing: 1,008,944 examinations were performed on patients receiving inpatient treatment in 2005 while 1,767,005 examinations were performed in 2013 (DRG hospitals). This development can be attributed to our aging population as well as to new indications for MRI including: Analyses of tissue composition and function, for example in the liver [3,4] and the heart [5,6]; multiparametric analyses of MR perfusion, e. g. in treated brain tumors [7]; new organs such as the lung [8]; dedicated examinations for intervention planning and operation monitoring [9 -11]; as well as MRI-guided interventions [12 -16].…”
