Background The purpose of this study was to cross‐validate and demonstrate how adult stature can be predicted in 13‐year‐old teenager's boys by using a new reference specific growth curve obtained from chronological age and maturity. Methods Stature measurements of 125 boys aged from 12 to 17.5 years were obtained over a period of five consecutive years. The maturity was based on the age of peak height velocity (APHV). An assessment of secondary pubertal stages using a simplification of the Tanner stages was also carried out. We found a connection between the secondary pubertal stage and the APHV. We carried out a prediction of the adult stature of 67 teenagers aged from 160 and 164 months. Results Significant differences between APHV enabled us to classify the adolescents into three categories according to their biological maturity: 19% of adolescents with advanced puberty, 62% with standard puberty and 19% with delayed puberty. The mean growth curves were used to predict the adult stature of 67 individuals with a good accuracy (±3 cm). The mean differences between predicted and real adult stature are −0.11 cm with 95% limits of agreement of [−3.2; + 2.8 cm]. Conclusions The new stature growth curves developed from age and maturation enables us to accurately track individual growth kinetics.

Age determination in children and adolescents of unknown age is often based on the degree of bone development (Greulich and Pile method). However, the variability of development at puberty, extrapolation to other populations and the use of invasive means make the reliability and feasibility of this method uncertain. Using pubertal criteria that are simple to identify and easily applicable to any population, we distributed a sample of Tunisian adolescents aged 11 to 16 years into pubertal stages. A nonlinear model between pubertal stages and chronological age was obtained by weighted line square procedures using quantile-quantile plots. Tunisian adolescents have an advanced onset of puberty of slightly more than 13 months compared to French adolescents. The use of our model allowed us to estimate with good accuracy the age of Tunisian adolescents based on their biological maturation. The mean differences between estimated age and actual age from these values were 0.12 ± 0.66 years. In 60% of the cases, the differences between chronological age and estimated age are between ± 6 months. The procedure followed uses simple pubertal criteria. This allows the development of a model for age attribution easily applicable to any population and thus avoids the drawbacks observed in other methods.

This study aims to perform age estimation using three different parameters from dental and skeletal development. The sample consisted of 98 dental records of patients aged from 10 to 16 years old, containing the chronological age and a set of radiographs (panoramic, lateral cephalometric and carpal radiographs) taken in the same day. The biological age was assessed through the dental development from panoramic radiographs according to the Nicodemo's method. The stages of dental development were registered and imported in CRONOL software (UNESP, São Paulo, Brazil), which provided the estimated dental age. The lateral cephalometric radiographs were analyzed to assess the development of the vertebrae C2, C3 and C4. And carpal radiographs were evaluated according to Fishman's method. Shapiro-Wilk test was used to verify the normality of the chronological and estimated age. T-test for unpaired samples was used to compare the normal data. Chi-square test was used to analyze the age in function of sex. Moderate and strong correlations were found between the chronological and biological (estimated) ages for all the methods. Statistically significant differences between the development of males and females were not observed (p>0.05). A linear regression formula was designed to allow age estimates statistically more accurate (p<0.0001). The formula reached an accuracy rate of 71.4%. In general, the methods underestimated the age. The combination of methods led to optimal performances for age estimation. The performances were similar between males and females.
