“…Although it was known that there is a high prevalence of multiple product use and an early age of tobacco use initiation among AN people ), a significant portion of participants tried using tobacco at a very young age (11 years and younger). Early age of onset of smoking has been associated with heavy smoking, higher nicotine dependence, less interest in quitting, and greater risk of disease as an adult (Lando et al, 1999). However, in this study population, the amount of tobacco consumed per day and dependence scores were relatively low.…”

“…In accordance with the observation that onset of smoking during adolescence is associated with more severe ND in adult smokers, 82,92,93 Weiss et al 82 studied a sample of 2827 long-term smokers, using a dichotomized definition of ND severity based on FTND scores: low (FTND = 0-4) and high (FTND 6-10). Six SNPs were significantly associated with ND with P-values ranging from 0.0032-0.0005 (including rs1699968, rs1051730 and rs578776) only in the early onset of smoking group (age 16 years or younger), but not in the late onset group (age 17 years or older).…”

“…Similarly, early smoking onset is associated with daily smoking, daily quantity of cigarettes and long smoking careers (Grant 1998;Lando et al 1999), as well as excessive alcohol consumption and alcohol use disorders (Grant 1998). As alcohol and tobacco are generally the first drugs with which adolescents experiment (Shiffman & Balabanis 1995), it is likely that initiation of drinking among non-drinkers will be highly associated with prior smoking (and initiation of smoking among non-smokers will be highly associated with prior drinking).…”
