Age of onset of a normally timed pubertal growth spurt affects the final height of children

Abstract: Background:The exact nature of the relationship between the age of onset of puberty and final height in normally maturing children is controversial. Some authors have claimed that the age of pubertal onset does not affect final height, and others have claimed the opposite. We hypothesized that both height and the age of onset of the pubertal growth spurt (PGS) are correlated to final height. Methods: The height measurements of 335 children (162 girls) were analyzed in an observational retrospective study. The … Show more

“…We calculate mean percentile of HAZ by girls’ menstruation onset status and boys’ low voice status. Since research suggests that age of onset of puberty is not correlated or is weakly correlated with final height, we assume that children who did not yet exhibit these puberty markers would later achieve the mean height of those who did exhibit them ( Limony et al, 2015 , Lundeen et al, 2016 , Stein et al, 2016 , Vizmanos et al, 2001 ). We calculate the differences in mean height and multiply these differences by the portion of boys and girls respectively in each quartile who had not yet exhibited the puberty marker.…”

“…If a child gets sexual initiation at an early age, it disturbs his/her psychological and social well being. Early puberty alters biological clock leading to lower life expectancy, shorter height 13 , 14 and altered growth. Early puberty makes one prone to various diseases that include even some types of cancer, especially breast cancer.…”
