Age of Unconformity within Tanjero Formation in Chwarta Area Northeast of Iraq (Kurdistan Region)

Abstract: The age of the thick succession of 500m conglomerate and red claystone layers in the incised valleys at the lower part of Tanjero Formation at Chwarta area is estimated to be (1.23 m.y) duration. The age determination is achieved by Planktonic Foraminiferal biostratigraphic zonation which included the following Zones: Globotruncana aegyptiaca Interval Zone (CF8), Gansserina gansseri Interval Zone (CF7) Racemiguemblina fructicosa Interval Zone (CF4), Pseudoguembelina hariaensis Interval Zone (CF3) with missing … Show more

“…The Pseudoumbilica palpebra Zone of studied sections is equivalent to the comparable zone of the Pseudoumbilica palpebra Zone of South Atlantic DSDP Site 525A (Li and Keller, 1998a); and in Tunisia (Li and Keller, 1998b); In Mahajanga Basin, Madagascar (Abramovich et al, 2002); in Tunisia (Arenillas et al 2000); in Egypt (Obaidalla 2005); and in NE Iraq (Sharbazheri, 2007 and2008); Eastern Tethys (Keller, 2004); Iran (Rostami and Balmaki 2018). The present Pseudoumbilica palpebral zone is equal to Abathomphalus mayaroensis zone documented from several countries ; Spain (Canudo et al, 1991); (Premoli Silva and Sliter, 1995&1999) in Italy;…”

“…The thickness of this zone is about (130m in well Ja-50, 50m in well Ja-53, and 30m in well Ja-67), the Globotruncana aegyptiaca zone indicates Early Maastrichtian. It corresponds to that of Caron (1985), in tropical regions, Shahin (1992), in Egypt, and it is equivalent to the same zone described in the south Atlantic DSPT Site 525A and Tunisia by Li and Keller (1998a, and b), Abramovich et al (2002), in Madagascar, Al-Mutwali and Al-Jubouri (2005), north Iraq, Sharbazheri (2007Sharbazheri ( , 2008.…”

“…This Biozone is defined in the studied section by the Gansserina gansseri (Bolli) as its first appearance representing the lower layer, while the lower layer is unidentified due to the unconformity boundary between Shiranish and Aliji formations (between Upper Cretaceous and the Early Paleocene) the thickness of this zone is about (25m in well Ja-50, 27m in well Ja-53, and 17m in well Ja-67). Most of the researchers in the biostratigraphic scheme, placed the Gansserina gansseri zone at the Middle-Lower Maastrichtian Keller, 1998), and(Abramovich et al, 2002) in DSDP Site 525A (Faris, 1984), (Abdel-Kareem and Samir, 1995), (Luning et al, 1998), (Elnady and Shahin, 2001), and (Samir, 2002), Egypt (Kassab 1974, 1975), (Abawi et al, 1982) (Abdel-Kareem, 1986a, (Kassab et al, 1986), (Al-Mutwali,1996, (Al-Mutwali and Al-Jubouri, 2005), and (Sharbazheri, 2007), Iraq. “…Definition: This subzone is defined by the FAD of Globotruncana aegyptiaca at the base and the FAD of Rugoglobigerina hexacamerata at the top. This subzone is equal to the CF8a subzone of Premoli- Silva and Verga (2004) and Sharbazheri (2007Sharbazheri ( , 2008Ismail ) 2012(; Baioumy and Tada (2005), while others considered the FAD of Globotruncana aegyptiaca lies within the late Campanian (Haq, Hardenbol, & Vail, 1987;Wagreich et al, 2009;Falzoni et al, 2016) and assigned age between 72.48 and 71.00 Ma by Haq et al (1987).…”
