Age-Related Changes in Serum/Plasma Biochemical Parameters of WHHLMI Rabbits.

Abstract: Abstract:We developed myocardial infarction-prone rabbits (WHHLMI rabbits) by selectively breeding coronary atherosclerosis-prone WHHL rabbits. To examine the serum/ plasma biochemical parameters of this animal model, we assayed the lipid and glucose levels, and enzyme activities of WHHLMI rabbits from 2 to 26 months of age using solid phase analysis. The results showed a good correlation with those measured with a conventional method. The serum enzyme activities and lipid levels varied with aging despite almo… Show more

“…It is hypothesised that this difference may be due to the variations in some factors such as stress, blood collection methods and housing conditions. However, in a study (Yamada et al, 2004) with similar conditions to our work, no statistically significant difference for serum glucose levels was determined between male and female animals.…”

“…For biochemical tests, the values at M0 were used as a baseline and were then compared to the values at the time of sacrifice. Most biochemical results were in agreement with those found by other researchers, (9,17,18,21,22) with only physiological variations without clinical significance, as the final values were lower than the initial ones.…”

“…These changes characterise a healing process (23) , with replacement of damaged intraocular tissue by connective tissue. (9,22,23) The formation of a pseudocapsule was observed, and a reduction of its thickness was shown through morphometry, probably due to a reduction in oedema and in the number of inflammatory cells during the experiment. Comparison of the pseudocapsule's thickness with different biomaterials showed that the bioglass-ceramic FII group had a thicker pseudocapsule both 7 and 180 days after implantation, indicating that bioglass-ceramic FII caused a greater inflammatory reaction throughout the experiment.…”

“…On both chow and atherogenic diets, old mice exhibited a significant reduction in plasma triglyceride levels relative to young mice. An age-related reduction in triglyceride levels has also been observed in male rabbits [16]. In contrast, in humans, aging is accompanied by increased levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol and non-HDL and decreased levels of HDL [17, 18].…”
